Water is the cause of a lot of issues on ships, from engine malfunctions to sunken vessels. Lifeboats are one way to combat this by providing a way for passengers and crew members to escape onto life rafts in the water below. What's more, lifeboats also assist in ocean rescues. But different types of Davit can be utilized in lifeboat systems, depending on which purposes you have in mind. This article will take a look at the different types of davits and how they differ in function.
A lifeboat davit is a device to lower a lifeboat in an emergency. It works via a gear system controlled by an electric or manual mechanism. The lifeboat davit is attached to the ship's deck, where the boat will be lowered. This could also be on additional platforms on the ship, provided it has enough space.

Lifeboat davits are a vital part of ship safety and security. They allow lifeboats to be deployed in an emergency and can also bring a rescue vessel to the distressed ship. This can help rescues at sea or in rivers, for instance, when another vessel is involved. It can also be used when evacuations from sinking ships are necessary.
Depending on the situation, there are different types of davit systems, each having advantages.
This is the most basic type of Davit. It consists of a pair of handles connected via cables. The handles are connected to the boat, and as seen in the photo, which shows an example of a snap davit, one handle rotates a few times from each side. This allows the boat's movement to be controlled by pushing and pulling on the handles. Pullling both hands at once allows for either hauled or free movement.
Single arm davit is mainly used to launch and recover rescue boats (or life rafts). The davit (crane ) has the function of electrical power (or manual) hoisting and gravity lowering. The davit arm can slew depend on pressure oil provided by the pump station, hand pump, or accumulator.
The traveler davit is a more advanced system that allows for a safe and automatic davit lowering. It has two cables on it, at the top. One acts as a grip to hold the other in place, which can then be adjusted using the cable to allow for movement on rails. The release of the grip cable will let the boat fall.
This system doesn't use cabling but relies on gravity to drop the boat. It can be adjusted quickly and is, therefore, handy in emergencies. Depending on your chosen model, it can also be used on any boat.
The sling davit is meant for smaller boats. It consists of a sling that the boat rests in and is used to lower. This system can be used with larger boats, however.
A-frame davit is a luffing type rescue boat davit(NM-AR type) with the ability of gravity launching and power recovering a rescue boat. It is used for launching, recovering, and storing rescue boat. The A-frame davit included electric type and hydraulic type. The hydraulic type has a wave compensation system (tension system) for recover a rescue boat (or fast rescue boat ) in rough seas.
The pull-on Davit is similar to the traveler davit but uses a cable release system instead. It works in the same way, except that it falls if it is pulled or pushed.
Hydraulic gravity davit (hydraulic luffing arm davit) is special equipment intended for shipboard launching and recovering a lifeboat (i.e launching the lifeboat it serves from the parent ship to sea level as well as recover the lifeboat to its original stowed position from sea level).
The hydraulic davit is capable of safely launching a lifeboat it serves to outboard position depending on electricity or accumulator (it's no needed for the parent ship to supply power) under the adverse condition of a trim of up to 10 degrees and a list of up to 20 degrees either way. Then safely lower the lifeboat depending on its gravity.
The appliance is designed and calculated based on all of the passengers of the boat embark and lower from the stowed position. The max working load for hanging off the ring is equal to the recovery load of the davit.
As the name suggests, the crane davit is a giant folding crane that lowers and lifts the lifeboat. This system can only be used when there's enough space for that crane, or it has to be built into the ship itself.
The different types of davits are ideal for different types of rescue boats. For instance, the pull-on system is often used on dinghies, catamarans, and small boats. This is because it allows for quick deployment and gives the ship or boat enough time to escape danger. The gravity davit is suitable for any small craft, while the sling davit can be used with large vessels such as ships and tugs.
It's essential for merchant vessels and naval ships to have lifeboat davit systems on board in case of emergencies and other challenges at sea. The different davit systems work together with lifeboats and rescue boats, which can help save people stranded at sea or on a sinking ship.
